Crime in Morocco

As with all countries there is a risk of crime and it is best to be aware of certain crimes in order to prevent you becoming a victim. On the streets of Morocco it is poor and this can lead to crime occurring. Please find below some advice and information relating to crime.

Because the country is poor, you will need to watch out for general crimes such as theft and pickpockets when you are out in public places, and even your belongings where you are staying.

Crime in most cases in Morocco is non confrontational and is more likely to occur at night when it is dark or in places that are isolated, but there are always exceptions. Women should be particularly aware not to travel alone in rural areas or in some areas of the major cities, as there is the possibility of harassment from Moroccan men.

When traveling it is advisable to take a taxis or a train as these are considered to be crime free. It is not recommended to use local buses as these are not safe. It is also best to not carry a large amount of cash around with you, and if you use the ATM machines to be aware of whom is around you while using them.

Property Security

If you are considering buying a property in a new development, it is best to ensure it is in a fully gated community, with 24 hour security this way it will give you confidence that your property is a little more secure when you are not there.

If you buy a property in a town that is not gated or does not have 24 hour security, it would be worth considering hiring a guardian to stay in the property when you are not there and these can be hired for around €100 per month, but this needs to be someone you trust to make sure you are comfortable your property is in good hands during your absence.

Drugs

You should be aware that cannabis and narcotics are illegal products in Morocco and if caught with them in your possession you could find you will be spending some time in prison.

Morocco is well known for the production of hashish and this is illegally exported in large quantities from the northern regions of Morocco . This is due to the stunning Rif Mountain which is the heart of the growing area and famous for its King Hassan hash.
